Patient and Public Involvement bursary award winners announced

2nd February 2018

Four research teams from NHS Lothian and University of Edinburgh have been awarded ACCORD-sponsored bursaries to support their patient and public involvement initiatives.

  • Fiona Denison and colleagues from MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, University of Edinburgh will use their award to set up a patient advisory group to work with them to develop their research idea: Virtual reality for distraction in obstetrics and gynaecology – is there a need?
  • Eleanor Whitaker and Lorraine Adamson from MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, University of Edinburgh will set up a Tommy’s Edinburgh Pregnancy Research Group to help them identify research questions and priorities and assist with future clinical trial design
  • Corrienne McCulloch and David Hope from Edinburgh Critical Care Research Group, NHS Lothian and University of Edinburgh will set up a PPI group to advise on critical care research
  • Doug Speake and Marion MacRury from the Colorectal Unit at NHS Lothian will set up a PPI group to help develop their clinical trials portfolio.

Applications were reviewed by members of the Patient Advisory Group, who will support the teams to help make their involvement plans a success. Congratulations to the winners!

Patient and public involvement is a critical part of research and means members of the public getting involved in the research process itself – being part of the research team rather than just being a participant in a study. It aims to improve the quality and relevance of research by ensuring the patient experience and public perspective is incorporated. Many research funders now expect applicants to demonstrate how they have involved members of the public in the design and conduct of their research.

Inspired to develop your own PPI group? There is still time to apply for the next phase of PPI bursary funding - deadline for applications is Friday 2nd March. Contact Allison Worth Allison.Worth@ed.ac.uk for details or find out more via the Accord website.
