Trauma and Emergencies

Our role is to support the delivery of high-quality clinical research in Trauma and Emergencies and manage participant recruitment to time and target, both for relevant Trauma and Emergencies studies which are led from Scotland, and studies led from other nations which Scottish sites are participating in. We provide support in the following areas:

  • Managing the study portfolio record
  • Monitoring the attainment of recruitment targets
  • Providing advice on study design and feasibility
  • Troubleshooting issues with poor recruitment
  • Sharing information on new studies
  • Identifying potential sites for studies
  • Raising the profile of research in Emergency Care
  • Facilitating links between research in Emergency Care and relevant stakeholders
  • Facilitating access to resources to support research, for example through Clinical Research Facility (CRF) Research Nurses

The Trauma and Emergencies portfolio is relatively small, so we are keen to support new investigators wishing to undertake commercial and non-commercial research in Scotland.

Trauma and Emergencies Studies

We support a wide range of research studies including:

  • Common acute care conditions (such as trauma and cardiac arrest)
  • Diagnostic tests used in acute care (such as point of care testing and imaging)
  • Development and testing of new technologies

Dr Alasdair Corfield, NRS Clinical Lead, Trauma and Emergencies

Alasdair trained as an Emergency Physician in Scotland & Australia and has an interest in critical care in Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital Care settings. He currently works as an Emergency Medicine Consultant and as a Consultant in Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine with ScotSTAR, delivering critical care transport with the Scottish Ambulance Service. His research interests are in trauma care, early warning scores and public health aspects of emergency care. In his spare time, Alasdair is a keen skier, average biker and novice triathlete.
