Ageing Research in Scotland

Dr Terry Quinn, Clinical Lead, NRS AgeingThe NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Ageing Specialty Group oversees observational and interventional research that is relevant to the care of older people. The topics of our research include, but are not limited to:

  • the mechanisms of ageing
  • physical activity in older people
  • frailty
  • sarcopenia
  • falls
  • health services research

Our cross-cutting work includes studies in cardiovascular disease, delirium, dementia, stroke and others. This necessitates a close working relationship with a number of different NRS Networks and Specialty Groups.

We send a newsletter 2-3 times a year to keep members informed of research activity in Scotland. We have over 350 members on our mailing list from a range of disciplines including both clinicians and researchers. We work in partnership with the British Geriatric Society (Scotland) to host a session at their annual scientific meeting. This offers excellent opportunities to hear from experts in the field, for researchers to present their work, and to enable group members to network.

Examples of recent NRS Ageing activity

We have worked with Ageing research leads form across the UK to create new guidance around the design and conduct of research in older adults.

We have helped international researchers find an older adult research placement.

We have advised researchers working on funding applications around best practice in involving older adults in research.

We have worked in partnership with industry to look at feasibility and set up of older adult research trials in Scotland.
