Regenerative Medicine

For specific Coronavirus (COVID-19) research and guidance visit the Coronavirus information hub.

The ageing population of the developed world requires a completely new class of treatments to address the major health needs created by degenerative disease. Conventional medicines treat the cause of disease (such as infection and autoimmunity) but do not repair the damage caused, and it is this damage that leads to the subsequent morbidity that has such a high economic and social cost.

Scotland has unrivalled expertise in stem cells research. The country as a whole ranked 1st in the world for stem cell research based on citation impact in 2007 (ScienceWatch). From 1997 – 2007, the University of Edinburgh was ranked 3rd in the world for Stem Cells based on citation impact (source: ScienceWatch) and the University of Glasgow ranked 4th in Europe for Clinical Medicine.

Major research studies which are currently underway or recently completed include:

  • Gene and Stem cell therapy for Heart Disease
  • Cell Therapies in Chronic Diseases
  • Blood Pharma Project
  • Remyelination in Multiple Sclerosis
  • Liver Cell Generation
  • Modelling Motor Neurone Disease.

The stem cell research community, already more than 150 strong and growing is uniquely placed to collaborate with industry in the discovery and delivery of novel therapies in regenerative medicine.

The Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine has been established as a collaboration between University of Edinburgh and Scottish Government to establish world-class infrastructure. This new £60m building provides cutting edge infrastructure including state of the art GMP facility for the manufacture of cells and tissues suitable for therapeutic use.
